How Pokémon Took Over The World, Again

Hi guys!

At this moment, MapleStory M and Brawl Stars are all we hear about in the mobile gaming world. Does Pokémon Go still rings a bell to you?

Back in 2016, Pokémon Go was rated as the number 1 mobile game in the world. It was highly addictive as the mobile app uses your phone's GPS to travel around the world, in search of legendary or cute Pokémons. Since its launch, Pokémon Go was at the top of every app store chart and hit 100 million downloads within a month. Many may wonder how Pokémon Go became an overnight viral sensation despite minimal marketing.

According to Jonah Berger, there are 6 "STEPPS" to achieve viral success!
Here are the 3 "STEPPS" of how Pokemon Go went Viral:
1. Public: Conformity
Unlike most video games, "playing Pokémon Go is a very public, observable thing" by Jonah Berger. The aim of the game is to embolden users to be out in the world, interact
with one another in real life while on the hunt for the Pokémons. People tend to imitate
what others are doing, so the more times they see it, the likelihood of them following is higher.

Take a look at this picture - How many of you had witnessed this familiar scene before?  Wouldn't you be curious of what the fuss is all about?
2. Social Currency: Leverage on game mechanics
Since the launch, Nintendo has relied heavily on word-of-mouth to promote Pokémon Go, expressly in the form of unpaid advertisement shared via social media. This user-generated content are basically simple posts where users can like, retweet, post and share their thoughts to the world.

One of the key mechanism of keeping users addicted is to make them feel good in the game. The achievement experience is the fundamental mechanism of the entire Pokémon Go game. In order to achieve that, users are motivated to catch as many pokemons and level up to become Pokémon Master in no time. Moreover, with the addition of Pokémon Go Friend feature, users get the opportunity to share achievements and send personalised gifts to motivate their friends too.
3. Triggers: Natural Connection
Back in 1996, Nintendo released the first ever Pokémon game (Red & Blue) on a game boy version. It was revolutionary at its time as users had the opportunity to feel like a true Pokémon master upon defeating gym leaders regardless of their age.

One crucial factor that plays a big role in Pokémon Go's success is Nostalgia. The adults that once embraced Pokémon during their childhood now get a second chance to reconnect to their old obsessions. Isn't that awesome???????

Today, most of us would agree that Pokémon Go had died down in popularity due to the fact that users have decreased tremendously. However, you would be surprised that Pokémon Go is far from dead!
